La Candelita – a new Latin restaurant comes to Chueca

La Candelita – a new Latin restaurant comes to Chueca

One of the most exciting things about living in Madrid is that there seems to be a new shop, bar or restaurant opening up every single day. In order to support local merchants (and/or because we get lazy sometimes), Raul and I are always keen to check out the latest additions to the neighborhood. Recently we discovered a new Latin restaurant on Calle Barquillo in Chueca called La Candelita.

Our first impressions of the place were extremely positive. We had been there before when it used to house El Diablito, and the change is extreme. I cannot even begin to imagine the investment that was necessary to achieve such a drastic and stunning makeover to the large, long space.  Decorated in lush, tropical colors with soft lighting and vibrant details, the setting could not be more inviting.  The large bar area in the front leads to a sizable dining area in the back with plenty of tables to accommodate both large and small groups.

Upon being seated, we were provided with a drink menu and a food menu, noting that the former was significantly longer than the latter. With its lengthy, creative drink list and its Venezuela-inspired food selection, Raul and I knew we were onto something.  Instead of getting entrees, we ultimately decided to share a few of the appetizers (there was a much larger selection of tapas versus main dishes, and they all sounded good). We particularly loved the degustación de arepitas (an assortment of baked cornmeal “pita-like” pockets with various fillings, including black beans and rice, and shredded beef) and the tequeños (loosely translated from the menu by me as rods of white, Venezuelan cheese covered with crunchy pastry dough, aka a sort of Venezuelan mozzarella stick), accompanied by a nice sweet and salty dipping sauce.

Upon reflecting on our meal, we decided we will undoubtedly return (and soon), but given our affinity for copas and tapas, we will likely opt to sit in the bar instead of the main dining area. Since we were more drawn to the starters (and have been known to enjoy a good cocktail now and again), and the bar has such a great vibe, our whole experience could be enhanced from that end of the spectrum.  I have also requested one of my Venezuelan friends to try it out and give me the always-appreciated native authenticity verdict, so look out for further feedback on this place down the line.

Cocktails in Madrid

Cocktails in Madrid

Enjoying a well-made cocktail after a rough week of work on a Friday is a habit Raul and I have developed since we moved to Madrid two years ago. The city has a wealth of high-quality “cocktail bars” and Raúl and I seem to have made it our mission to try as many different ones as our schedule permits (in the name of Guiri Guide research, of course). I thought I would share with you all some of our favorites:

O’Clock: this place is fantastic. It is like being transported to an old cocktail bar in England a hundred years ago.  Even though I am a non-smoker, I feel like I should light up a cigar or break out a pipe.from the second I walk in there In addition to the old-fashioned atmosphere, the drink list is varied and extensive and the servers are both knowledgeable and amable.

Del Diego: The thing that stands out the most in this famous cocktail bar is the service. No more than a second after walking in the door, someone is there to find a place for you to sit at a table, stand at the bar, etc. The bartenders are real pros as well. This place is un clásico on the Madrid cocktail circuit and anyone who is a fan of a well-mixed libation should make a point of stopping by here.

Gin Club: Of all of the places we have tried, this one has our favorite gin and tonic, which given the name is not all too surprising. It’s small, very dark and always crowded, but it is definitely worth it for the real gintonic aficionado.

Bristol Bar: This lovely cocktail bar/restaurant is fun and unique. It has a quirky British style, a huge selection of gins, and the type of menu you do not see in many places in Madrid (think brunch and English breakfast on the weekends, and a la carte selections such as steak and Guinness pie, fish & chips, the Codfather, etc.)

Shuzo’s: this small, unassuming bar makes a surprisingly awesome gin and tonic, and at €10 for a G’Vine and fever tree, it is a reasonably priced one as well (especially for Madrid and particularly Salamanca). This is another place that is always hasta arriba, but with the undeniable charm of its Japanese owner coupled with the fact that you can order a tapa of sushi with your drink, this is not hard to believe.

• Buenos Aires Cocktail Lab: this relatively new drink joint is an undiscovered gem. It has a sleek, modern atmosphere with chill music and a very creative list of cocktails based in part on the specialties of the owners’ bartender friends. I had one the other night with pepper vodka and it was ridiculously good and very unique. I do not give this place much more time before the locals find out and this place gets packed.

¡Salud!

Madrid al Fresco

Living in Madrid one cannot help but notice the abundance of bars and restaurants that this city has to offer.  Now that summer is in full swing and most of the locals have fled the city to invade the beach, it is the perfect time to explore these places and enjoy Madrid from one if its many terrazas.

If you are looking to dine al aire libre, I recently discovered Nihil Prius, a lovely modern Mediterranean restaurant located near the Banco de España. The terrace is not street-level but rather two flights up, affording both tranquility and privacy while enjoying your meal. The food was also excellent as well as reasonably priced considering the setting.

For those looking for a beer or cocktail instead, I have a bit more experience in that arena.  I cannot think of many better places for an afternoon beer or wine outside than la terraza of El Espejo, located on Paseo Recoletos near Plaza Colon. If you are lucky, you will be there when of the piano players is performing, thereby enriching the atmosphere even more.  While you are in the neighborhood, there is a concentration of bars with outdoor seating in Plaza Santa Barbara, including Bulevar, Cruz Blanca, and Cervecería Santa Barbara. Another terrace ideal for a drink during daylight hours is El Viajero in La Latina. It has great views of the city´s old quarter and has a fun, tropical vibe as well. The mojitos are also noteworthy.

For something a little fancier and after dark, there are several hotels with great rooftop bars, including Room Mate Óscar in Chueca, Hotel Urban in Barrio de las Letrasand The Penthouse in Plaza Santa Ana.  All of these places boast great views of the city, posh settings and great cocktails. On a warm, dry, Madrid summer night you really cannot go wrong.

Considering it is August, be sure to check ahead of time to make sure places are open before making the trek as I have noticed that many establishments enjoy a descanso just like the rest of us this month.   ¡Salud!
