Madrid: St Patrick’s Day 2016!

St Patrick’s Day 2016Hey guiris! Are you starting to get that spring fever? Looking to let those ants out of your pants and get a little weird? Well, we at The Guide have a treat in store for you: a list of St Patrick’s Day Events in Madrid that will knock those pants right off and send them express to mars!

This year, Madrid is combining the classic tradition of Irish bars, bombastic parties, black tie galas, and general hooliganism, mixed with a little bit of wholesome Irish tradition and culture. Needless to say, it’s going to be a blast, so let’s get down to details:

St Patrick’s Day Events in Madrid

The Irish Embassy
Events from Sunday March 13th to Friday March 18th

St Patrick’s Day 2016St Patrick’s Family Fun Day, Parque Deportivo, Puerta de Hierro, on March 13th:
This blow out includes traditional Irish dancers and musicians, Gaelic football, hurling matches, and Irish films. For families with children, the event also includes temporary tattoos, stickers, storytelling, and Irish theatre! Enjoy traditional Irish cuisine from the vendors at the park, or feel free to pack your own picnic.

St Patrick’s Charity Gala, Westin Palace Hotel on March 18th:
A perfect opportunity for networking and adding a little sparkle to your life, this black tie charity ball is brought to do by the embassy in conjunction with the Spanish Irish Business Network. The 100€ entrance may seem steep, but grants access to: cocktails and appetizers, a four course Irish meal (smoked salmon, angus beef etc), an open bar, live entertainment from the Irish Treble, and a raffle to benefit families affected by William’s Syndrome. Plus, it’s held at the Palace, darling! What’s not to love?

The Colonials (who are flown in from Ireland just for this!) are returning with another great set, dancing, and countless opportunities to make new friends! Another great reason to go: free necklaces, drinks, and some yummy snacks! Grab your entry bracelet at the door and get a free drink, and/or visit at any time in March to try their Irish themed menu.

Are you a St Patty’s newbie? Here are a few things you should know…

Madrid St PatricksGlobal Greening

Countries across the world are jumping on the Irish bandwagon by participating in the Global Greening campaign. One example in our very own Madrid is the Cibeles fountain and palace, which will glow various shades of green all evening on March 17th, so be sure to walk by and check it out! A few reasons why this is happening:

St Patty’s complicated, yet glorious history…

Let’s take this back a moment and remember why we’re drinking all this beer: St Patrick’s Day was crowned as an official feast day during the 17th century, originally as a celebration of St Patrick’s, and thus Christianity’s, arrival in Ireland. As the years went by, the day graduated into the day we know and love: a celebration of Irish heritage, culture, music, and origins. Religious and cultural festivals (or a mix of both) can be found not only in Ireland, but throughout the world: the largest non-national celebrations are held in Canada, Great Britain, Argentina, and the United States. Even the international space station throws a party (though I’m still waiting for my invite)!

A quick tip on your getup:St patricks day Madrid

The color green and/or the sporting of a green shamrock are non-optional, unless you want to get pinched! The shamrock has been worn for centuries to represent luck, Irish heritage, and (at times) the Catholic Church. Whichever representation you choose to honor just make sure you’re wearing green or (and again, I do not joke and am 100% speaking from personal experience), some enthusiastic, slightly tipsy partier will definitely pinch you. Then again, that might be exactly what you’re looking for! 😉

Have fun guiris! We love you!

Viva San Isidro!

If you work in Madrid city, enjoy your day off this Tuesday, the 15th of May, and thank Madrid’s patron saint, San Isidro Labrador. Also the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro is celebrated every year with a procession through the Carabanchel district of Madrid, as well as various activities in the center. Viva San Isidro!

As San Isidro falls on a Tuesday this year, the celebrations begin today, with the pregón, or kickoff taking place in Plaza de la Villa tonight at 8:00pm. Once the Gigantes y Cabezudos (a few giant statues with enormous heads) arrive in Plaza de la Villa from Plaza Santo Domingo and Plaza del Oriente, San Isidro weekend will officially begin. After the pregón, head to Plaza Mayor to hear a great concert by the Madrid Symphonic Orchestra at 9:30pm.

My favorite part of San Isidro is the music. All weekend in Parque de Las Vistillas (metro Ópera), live music can be heard at practically any time of day. Every evening there will be concerts with a bit more flair and staging and the park will be completely full of people singing and dancing to traditional tunes. However if you want to hear something a bit more contemporary, make your way to the Espacios y Congresos at Puerta del Ángel for PlanetaMadrid. This free concert series celebrates a dedication to sustainable development and runs from approximately 5:00pm to midnight Saturday evening. There will be environmental and education workshops while eight bands play on one of the two stages. On Sunday another concert series, UniversiMAD, will be held in the same space. This is another concert series, but it’s only free to enter if you have an invitation, which you can find at FNAC and opentrada.com. Also, keep your eyes open at the smaller concert venues throughout the weekend, as many of them will be having free shows as part of the celebration.

I think the one of the best parts of the San Isidro program this year will be the fireworks show in Parque Retiro. At 10:30pm on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, different pyrotechnics companies will prepare and ignite a spectacle of lights and music at the Alfonso XIII monument. And, like every year, this holiday would not be complete without a visit to La Pradera (also known as Parque de San Isidro, metro: Marques de Vadillo). There will be a different concert in La Pradera every night during the weekend as well as next weekend… don’t miss it!

All of this and much, much more is available during San Isidro weekend. Click here to download the official program and take advantage of your city’s patron fiesta!

Getting Halloween Ready in Madrid

Getting Halloween Ready in Madrid

Even though it still feels like summer in Madrid, Halloween is fast approaching.  Like many an American, I have been thinking about and planning my costume for quite a while now, so this past weekend I set out to get some supplies in order. Through the power of the internet, I was lucky enough to discover a store in the ABC Centro Comercial on Calle Serrano called PARTY FIESTA.

Knowing Spain and its general lack of Halloween costume culture, at least in the 12 and over set, my expectations were pretty low going in.  In the interest of giving credit where credit is due, I have to say I was genuinely impressed with the size of the store and the selection.  There was not the same “let’s turn a current event or viral video persona into a costume” thing as there is back home, but the basics were more than covered. I was particularly impressed with the make-up/fake blood/wig selections (I was told approximately 1 in 2 Spaniards is either a witch or a dead person, so this comes as no surprise).  There was also a decent assortment of Halloween party props and accessories, such as the multi-color strobe light of some sort that the couple in front of me in line was purchasing.

PARTY FIESTA, as the name implies, also has lots of supplies for parties in general (kids’ birthdays, holidays) such as decorations, paper goods, balloons and the like.

As I head back to the world capital of Halloween next week to attend the big parade (er, and also to get married), I can safely say that Madrid did not let me down.  This “Bride of Frankenstein” to-be will not be any less spooky than if I purchased my garb in the belly of the beast itself.
